North Cowichan resident Royce Warren has spent much of his life working in resource industries.
“I’ve been a forester, I’ve been a miner, I’ve been a commercial fisherman. I’ve farmed for a number of years,” he said. “A lot of that was earlier on in my life and I decided to go to university and study the consequences of some of the stuff that I was doing.”
Warren studied Political Science at Simon Fraser University before moving onto Sustainability and Resources at the University of British Columbia.
“When I was doing my PhD, I realized that sustainability – it took me a couple of decades to figure this out – sustainability means you have to know something about everything, and I wasn’t even close to that. So I spent the next 30 years studying sustainability, through my work and through my own study. And I finally got a handle on it.”
He’s recently finished authoring a book on sustainability, Climate and the Courage of Leadership, which he started working on in earnest in 2020.
“ Sustainability means enduring. That’s all it means. It just means that society should endure forever and forever, as long as the sun keeps burning.”
