The Canadian Mental Health Association is helping bring a new approach to respond to mental health emergencies in BC.
It was announced late last year that 12 Peer Assisted Care Teams, or PACT for short, are coming to the province.
The teams are made up of one mental health professional, and one peer with lived experience of mental health and or substance challenges.
The goal is for PACT to replace police responses for mental health interventions wherever possible.
One of the teams has been up and running on Vancouver’s North Shore for around a year as a pilot project.
In Victoria and New Westminster teams are set to begin operating very soon, while the other 9 locations are still being determined.
The teams are a project of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s British Columbia Chapter. CMHA BC CEO Jonny Morris spoke with People First Radio about PACT.
