Marlo Mayers spoke with the media ahead of moving into a new supportive housing building in Nanaimo.
Called Corenerstone, The 51 unit building is operated by Connective Nanaimo, formerly known as the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society.
Residents at a temporary housing site in Nanaimo called Newcastle Place are being prioritized to move in, which the province says in a press release will open up 50 spaces at Newcastle place for people currently staying in the shelter system.
Mayers said she spent around three years at Newcastle Place, and is looking forward to her new room.
“I love it. It’s big. It’s spacious, high ceilings, you feel like you can move around, right? Own fridge, we get to cook. It’s nice.”
When asked what she would recommend the people running Cornerstone do to make sure the new space is pleasant for the people moving in, Mayers said it’s important to get to know each individual.
“Don’t treat everybody the same. Because everybody has different issues and different things that they need,” she said. “Sit down and listen to [tenants], get to know them. There are some really great talented people out there, but don’t blanket us all under the same rules because we can’t live that way.”
