Before he was a four time Grey Cup champion, the first player to be the game’s MVP and Most Valuable Canadian at the same time, Andrew Harris was playing in Nanaimo with the Vancouver Island Raiders.
Now retired, Harris has shared some of the challenges he faced growing up and during his career in a documentary that came out last year called Running Back Relentless. He opened up about difficult family relationships, troubles in school, a period of suicidal ideation and other obstacles he had to overcome.
Now president of the Vancouver Island Raiders Harris, was back in Nanaimo this month for a fireside chat about mental health where he was joined by other leaders in the organization put together by the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Home Builders Association – Vancouver Island. The event was held at the Nanaimo Golf Club and moderated by Kerrian Coady. Joining Harris on the panel was Raider’s Head Coach Sean Arabsky, and Warren McCarty, who runs a football consulting business and trains quarterbacks across North America.
