Brandon Kirk is sharing his story of life after addiction, and creating a space for others to do the same.
The Cowichan Valley resident is working on a new video podcast series, Beyond Your Wildest Imagination.
“it’s a podcast about life beyond addiction,” Kirk said. “It’s about Cowichan Valley people telling their powerful stories about getting sober, staying sober, and living the good life.”
Kirk was awarded a grant from Telus Storyhive to produce the project. He shared some of his own experiences moving through addiction with People First Radio.
“I struggled for many years, like most people, having trauma early on in my life,” he said. “I had an abusive father, and a bit of a struggle at home for sure.”
A few years ago, Kirk took up triathlon following a suggestion from a hockey teammate. He says it wasn’t a smooth start.
“I didn’t know how to bike properly with clip-less shoes, and I fell over in my front yard, and I certainly didn’t know how to swim with my head down with goggles, and I wasn’t much of a runner.”
After a race, he saw someone in a team Canada jersey.
“I said, ‘Oh, I want that. How do I get that?'”
Two years later, he was traveling the world to compete with team Canada at the age group level.
“the only reason that I could accomplish those goals was because I made the decision to change my life,” he said.
Kirk says he’s still looking for guests for his new podcast. He can be reached via email at brandon@limitlesshealing.ca.
