WeCan Shelter Society is a Comox Valley organization that builds homes inside shipping containers for people who had previously been experiencing homelessness to move into.
Charlene Davis, one of the group’s founders, spoke with People First Radio.
She said it takes between $25,000 and $30,000 to build a unit and get a person living in it, and that the organization operates without any government funding – no one from WeCan is taking a salary.
“Everyone that works down there is a volunteer,” Davis said.
People have had varied experiences after moving into the units, according to Davis.
“We have had people move on that to better living situations, go back to school,” she said.
“And then we have others who have gone as far in their journey as they’re going to be able to go. And they’re simply just not living in the bush or in the streets. They’re just going to be living with us until they pass.So we’re quite okay with that.”
