Singing and songwriting have helped Parksville-Qualicum’s Amarii express things he’s struggled to talk about. Now, they’ve also helped him sign with a new label, Kolossal Records.
Amarii says he remembers falling in love with music sitting in front of the television watching Much Music Videos at age 12, but that he only started making music in a friend’s attic when he was 17.
“We were just kind of messing around,” he said. “I was making stuff-it wasn’t good, but it was fun and that’s what kind of initially started it.”
“It became more of an actual thing I really started to love, and realized ‘I’m actually pretty decent at this, I think I should start taking this seriously.'”
Amarii says that making music has been like therapy for him.
“It’s helped me express feelings and emotions through singing and writing that I have struggled saying, struggled expressing just talking,” he said. “It really helps to put it into a song. It makes me feel a lot better.”
He spent time in the foster system growing up and says he hopes his success in signing with a label can serve as an example for youth.
“I want to spread an overall positive message that any foster kid, or you don’t have to be in foster care, just any kid in general that’s going through a hard time with their parents, with anything in life, just like try to keep your head up.”
